ASSESSMENT TASK 2 - Report on a visit

History and magnificent view. The “Castelo de San Ánton” is not a kind of museum giving information that you would probably forget later. There, you can learn about the past and the present of Corunna, Capital of Galicia in Spain, and relax looking the sea from the highest point.

Since 1968, visitors have been able to this place as a museum of Archaeology and History, and it is a Fort that was constructed between XVI and XVIII centuries to defend the city of the sea attacks. The exposition has three sections: medieval art, archaeology and history of the city. Besides, the visitor can contemplate the architecture of the castle.

In the first section, there are a lot of old arms because between XVIII and XX centuries the fort was a prison. During the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, politics, militarists and several people were prisoners there. There you can see antic gold jewels too. In the second section, there are a lot of walls with texts about the period of roman domination in Corunna. And in the third part of the exhibition, the visitors appreciate instruments of Pre-history, for example, knives. Besides, there is the room of the governor. The museum has various rooms, each of which explains a different part of the history of the city and of Galician archaeology.

According the website that belongs of city council, the castle was built with stones from the old city walls and was a significant factor in the defence of the city against Drake, who terrorised the coastlines in those days. In the times of the city heroine María Pita, the castle was an artillery base against the English attacks.
